When you live in the North Myrtle Beach area, you know how the summers are - HOT. It’s important to make sure that we all stay cool and hydrated throughout the summer months along the South Carolina coast. But running the air conditioning in your home all day and night for months on end can be quite costly, right? Of course it can be! No one looks forward to summer cooling bills, but what if we told you there are ways you can save on your air conditioning costs this summer?
Ways to Reduce Air Conditioning Costs
By now you’re probably thinking “Alright, get to the point! Tell us your magical ways of helping us save money!” And we totally understand! Instead of giving you a long, drawn out blog about stuff you don’t care about, we’re going to get right to the point. If you want to save money this summer, try out the following methods:
Check for Air Leaks
If your home has cracks in windows or doors, then you’re definitely losing air that you want contained inside of your home. If you’re not sure if you have leaks in your home, then you may want to consider requesting a home energy audit from a local contractor. Or, if you have the time and energy, you can always try to do an audit yourself by going outside and running your hand along the exterior of all the doors and windows of your home. If you feel cool air coming out from windows or doors on the outside of your home, then you’ll want to look into adding extra insulation or sealant to help keep the cool air in.
Use a Fan
A great way to save money on your air conditioning bill is to use a fan whenever possible. Instead of keeping your cooling temperature super low, you can set it a few degrees higher than normal and use a fan to help circulate the cool air around the room. However, be sure to turn the fan off whenever you’re not in the room so you don’t waste energy.
Buy a Smart Thermostat
One thing that’s worth investing in is a smart thermostat. These are fantastic tools to help you regulate the temperature of your home even if you’re at work, out at the store, or on vacation. Most, if not all, of these smart thermostats have apps that allow you to change the settings of your thermostat right from your phone!
Raise the Temperature When You Leave
While it may not seem like a good idea, raising the temperature of your air conditioning when you leave your house is actually a great way to help you save money. This will help to put less strain on your system, which will keep it working more efficiently throughout the summer. This point goes hand-in-hand with the aforementioned point of buying a smart thermostat, because, if for some reason you forget to adjust the temperature before leaving, you can adjust it from anywhere with your smart thermostat app!
Close Your Blinds
This is perhaps the easiest thing to do on this list! Closing your blinds, curtains, and shades will help prevent solar heat from warming your home throughout the day. If solar heat gain occurs, then your air conditioning unit will have to work harder in order to try to cool down your space. Closing blinds and other window treatments will prevent this from happening, and, in turn, will help reduce your cooling bill.
Of course, regular filter changes and maintenance will also help keep your costs down. If you’re in need of HVAC maintenance or have questions about your heating and cooling system, be sure to give the pros at All Green a call and we’ll be happy to help!
